Bur Oak (Quercus Macorcarpa)
Deciduous rounded tree that can grow to 50'-70' tall, 40'-60' across. Slow to moderate growth. Very large leaves have deep cuts between their lobes.  Large acorns. Bark is rough.  Great shade or ornamental tree in Austin. Insect and disease problems are rare in this oak. Plant in full sun. 



Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana)
This is an evergreen shade tree.  It is a moderate to fast grower reaching to a height of 30' or more when mature. Allow ample space for growth.  Thick dark bark on old growth.  Very hardy and drought tolerant once established. Grows well in all local soils. Plant in full sun. Hardy to 0.

 

 

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica)
This is an evergreen small tree or large shrub.  It will stand 10-15' tall at maturity.  Grows well in average Austin soils.  Plant in full sun to light shade.  Fragrant white flowers appear in.  Edible fruit matures in spring if the winter is mild.  A loquat is ideal as a screen or an accent at a corner.

Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora)
This is an evergreen well-adapted to Texas.  It can be grown as a shrub or small tree.  Grows 10-20' tall and wide.  Sweet, fragrant grape-like clusters of purple flowers appear in the spring.  Attracts butterflies, insects, birds. Large semi-deciduous tree.  Grows 40-60' tall and wide. The new growth has a bronze color.  Beautiful large green leaves turn yellow in the Fall.  Smooth gray bark.  Plant in full sun to part shade.   The tree is adaptable to alkaline, neutral, and acid soil. It is drought tolerant.

Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia)
Large deciduous tree.  Grows 40-60' tall and wide.  Small jagged edge leaves turn orange and yellow in the Fall.  Smooth brown bark.  Grows well in Austin.

Large deciuduous tree.  Large colorful shiny leaves.  Grows 40-60' tall and wide.  Blooms large white fragrant flowers in the Spring.  Smooth gray/dark bark.  Red seed clusters after flowers bloom.  Plant in full sun to part shade. 

Little Gem Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem')
Deciduous tree.  Large colorful shiny leaves.  Grows 10-20' tall, 5-10' wide.  Blooms white fragrant flowers in the Spring. Red seed clusters after flowers bloom.  Smooth gray bark.  Plant in full sun to part shade.
